How I use AI

Artificial intelligence (AI) is changing the face of coding and creativity at an astounding pace. Heck, I just used ChatGPT to quickly get a stuffing recipe for Christmas dinner. But AI is also confusing the authorship process and I believe it is important to be transparent about how and where I am using AI in my work.

Fundamentally, I view AI as a helpful sidekick. It isn't creating anything outright for me but I absolutely leverage AI to make my life easier. I wrote a bit more about this in my blog post on the rise of ideas-first developement.

Here are a few of the ways I use AI in my work:

  • Spell check and grammar: Honestly, for me, this is about how easily I can copy/paste code and markdown straight into AI platforms and have it understand content and spellcheck in a way that traditional word processors just can't yet.
  • Creating placeholder content: I just used AI to create 10 different dummy recipes for me when writing a blog post on search functionality. Creating this kind of placeholder content is a great use for AI.
  • Fixing TypeScript errors: You know those annoying, hard to understand, console errors? Yep, AI understands them perfectly and can give me the fix pronto.
  • Writing some code: This is a bit nuanced but I do use AI to write some code. More often than not I use it like an advanced autocomplete to save me time digging through MDN web docs or Stack Overflow posts. I already know what I want to do but just use AI to write parts of it.
